MEXICO CITY, Mexico: Mexico on Friday granted political asylum to Ecuador’s former vice president, who entered the country’s embassy in Quito, deepening a diplomatic row between the two Latin American countries.

The announcement came a day after Quito ordered the Mexican diplomat to leave the country in reaction to comments from President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador that annoyed Ecuador.

Mexico’s foreign ministry announced that it had decided to grant former vice president Jorge Glas political asylum “after a thorough analysis” of the situation.

Glas worked under leftist Rafael Correa between 2013 and 2017, and sought refuge in the Mexican embassy in December after an arrest warrant was issued against him on corruption charges.

He needs a safe-conduct pass to leave the country, but Ecuador’s president, Daniel Noboa, has refused to grant it, raising the possibility that he could be stuck in the embassy indefinitely.

Glas was released from jail in November after serving time on corruption charges in a major scandal involving Odebrecht, the Brazilian construction giant.

He faces a new arrest warrant for misappropriating funds earmarked for reconstruction after the devastating 2015 earthquake.

Mexico on Friday complained about an increased police presence outside its embassy in Quito, saying it clearly amounts to harassment.

Both governments ruled out severing diplomatic ties, despite Quito declaring Mexican Ambassador Raquel Serur “persona non grata.”

Until a few years ago, Ecuador was considered an island of peace, surrounded by major cocaine producers Peru and Colombia, but now the country is also plagued by gang violence.
