ISLAMABAD: Meta on Monday launched the Urdu version of its artificial intelligence assistant, Meta AI, for users in Pakistan as part of a broader push to support the South Asian country’s digital transformation, the company said in a press release.

The announcement was made during the “Future in Focus: AI and Innovation” event, hosted jointly by Meta and Pakistan’s Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication (MoITT).

According to Meta, the addition of Urdu language capability will enable millions of Pakistani users to interact with Meta AI more easily, making technology more inclusive and accessible.

“Pakistani users will now be able to interact with Meta AI not only in English but also in Urdu,” the company said in a press release.

Sarim Aziz, Meta’s Director of Public Policy for South and Central Asia, said the new feature would help expand digital access and local innovation.

“We aim to support public sector and educational institutions in driving digital transformation through effective use of AI. We are also delighted that Meta AI is now available in Urdu, giving the local community new opportunities to connect with technology in their own language,” he said.

Collaboration on AI education

The event also saw the launch of an experimental programme focused on AI education and government digital transformation in Pakistan.

Developed in partnership with the IT Ministry, the Higher Education Commission (HEC), the National Computing Education Accreditation Council (NCEAC), and training institute atomcamp, the AI Literacy Programme aims to train 350 non-computer science university teachers in basic AI skills.

Fizza Amjad, CEO of atomcamp, said the initiative would help integrate AI learning across disciplines.

“By equipping non-technical faculty with AI knowledge, we’re creating a ripple effect that will reach thousands of students and strengthen the link between academia and industry,” she said.

Public sector innovation and the Llama model

Meta also unveiled a localised edition of the guide Transforming Public Sector Innovation in Asia Pacific with Llama, developed with Deloitte and supported by the Ministry of IT.

The document outlines how Meta’s open-source AI model, Llama, can help governments enhance public services, improve efficiency, and strengthen data sovereignty.

“The guide highlights best practices from across the Asia-Pacific region, including Pakistan, demonstrating how AI can streamline government operations,” Meta said.

Pakistan’s push for digital governance

In her address at the event, Federal Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja said Pakistan was committed to advancing digital governance and AI integration.

“Under the Prime Minister’s Digital Nation Vision, Pakistan is moving toward a future where technology empowers every citizen,” she said.

“Our partnership with Meta reflects this commitment, promoting AI education, digital transformation, and innovation within government and educational institutions.”

She said that 98 percent of federal ministries have already transitioned to an e-office system, while Pakistan’s judiciary is also undergoing digital transformation to improve transparency and efficiency.

The minister added that the government had approved a comprehensive National AI Policy in July 2025, which aims to train one million youth in artificial intelligence and related fields.

Digital transformation Xperience 2025

Meta also announced the Government Digital Transformation Xperience (GDTX) 2025, a new programme designed to help public institutions adopt Meta’s digital solutions and best practices.

The initiative will bring together experts from government, academia, and industry to share strategies for effective AI deployment and digital innovation.

Driving Pakistan’s AI future

Meta said its collaboration with Pakistan’s government aligns with the South Asian country’s vision for AI-driven economic growth and inclusive digital access.

“Through our partnership with MoITT, HEC, and NCEAC, we aim to help the public sector and academia harness AI to drive digital transformation for the benefit of people across Pakistan,” Aziz said.
