NEW YORK: The team responsible for developing the AI agent social network Moltbook, which gained widespread attention last month, has joined Meta as the tech giant continues to expand its focus on artificial intelligence.
Matt Schlicht, Ben Parr and other members of the Octane AI startup — the group that launched Moltbook in late January — will become part of Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL), the company confirmed.
A Meta spokesperson told reporters that bringing the Moltbook team into MSL could create new opportunities for artificial intelligence agents to support individuals and businesses. Financial details of the deal were not disclosed.
The spokesperson added that connecting AI agents through a constantly active directory represents a new approach in a rapidly evolving field, and Meta looks forward to collaborating with the team to develop innovative and secure AI-driven experiences.
Meta founder and chief executive Mark Zuckerberg has made the pursuit of superintelligence a key objective for the company, which has increasingly integrated artificial intelligence into its major platforms, including Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp.
Moltbook presents itself as a social network created specifically for AI agents, allowing them to share information, discuss topics and endorse content.
AI agents are software systems capable of performing digital or computer-based tasks independently without direct human involvement.
The launch of Moltbook as a platform for interaction between AI agents followed the earlier release of the OpenClaw system, designed to help developers create software agents.
Although Moltbook claims to host more than one million agents, critics argue that many of the posts on the platform are actually written by humans rather than autonomous AI systems.
While most discussions on the network revolve around programming and the functioning of AI agents, users have also explored broader subjects such as philosophy, religion, economics and the relationship between humans and artificial intelligence.
One individual behind an AI agent on the platform even claimed that the system independently created a religion called the “Church of Molt”, presenting itself as its prophet.
