SAN FRANCISCO: Meta has taken a major step toward breaking language barriers on social media by expanding its AI-driven real-time translation and lip-syncing features for Reels.
The update introduces support for additional Indian languages including Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi and Kannada, alongside existing options such as English, Hindi, Portuguese and Spanish.
Powered by advanced neural machine translation, the technology generates dubbed audio and real-time captions, automatically suggesting translations when a Reel’s language differs from a viewer’s device settings.
What sets this feature apart is its ability to recreate the creator’s voice in the translated language while synchronizing mouth movements, making it appear as though the creator is naturally speaking that language.
Meta says the initiative is designed to promote cross-cultural discovery and help users enjoy content regardless of where it was created or the language it was filmed in.
Early feedback from creators indicates that the expanded language support has already helped their videos reach new and diverse audiences.
The translation and lip-sync tools are free to use and available to public Instagram accounts in regions where Meta AI is active, as well as Facebook creators with at least 1,000 followers.
According to Meta, creator feedback played a key role in shaping the feature, reinforcing the company’s goal of connecting people globally through accessible and engaging content.
