ISLAMABAD/MIRPUR: The minimum temperature in Srinagar dropped to -4.3°C as the freezing conditions worsened in the Kashmir valley.
Qazigund on Wednesday recorded its coldest night so far recorded, minus 7.4°C, says a report from across the line of control.
The report states, “Top mountainous Pahalgam shivers at minus 11.7°C and Qazigund town recorded minus 7.4°C.”According to the report’s reference to meteorological department sources, occupied Srinagar recorded a dropped of 1.6°C last night compared to the previous night’s minus 2.7°C. The study stated that today’s minimum temperature was 2.2°C below average for the summer capital.
According to the report, Qazigund recorded a low of minus 7.4°C compared to minus 5.4°C the previous night. It was 4.1°C below average. The major tourist destination in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district, Pahalgam, experienced its coldest night this season with a low of – 11.7°C compared to minus 11.8°C the previous night. Today’s temperature was 4.5°C below the area’s average.

In contrast to the previous night’s minimum of minus 5.2°C, Kokernag reported a minus 6.3°C, which was 2.4°C below average for the area, according to the report.
The overnight low at Gulmarg was minus 11.3°C as opposed to minus 11.5°C last night. While the minimum temperature today was 3.6°C below average, the coldest winter night so far was January 16 at the renowned ski resort in the Baramulla area of north Kashmir. Jammu recorded 4.5°C against 3.1°C the last night. It was 2.6°C below average for J&K’s so-called winter capital.
Banihal recorded minus 0.3°C (below average by 0.1°C), Katra 4.2°C (2.0°C below average), Batote minus 0.5°C (below standard by 2.3°C), and Bhadarwah minus 1.4°C (0.5°C below average). The report said Kargil and Leh recorded a low of minus 23.1°C and 15.8°C, respectively. The report said the weather would likely be partly cloudy but mainly dry during the next 24 hours.
“Weather is predicted to be cloudy with chances of light snow and rain from January 19-21 over scattered places mainly over high mountains,” the report said. “From 22nd to 24th, there is a chance of light snow and rain in plain areas whereas, moderate snow in higher reaches is predicted during 23-24 January at most places of J&K,” report.
Kashmir is under the grip of the 40-day-long, harsh winter period ‘Chillai-Kalan,’ which started on December 21. It will be followed by ‘Chillai-Bachha’ (baby cold), a 10-day-long period predicted from February 20 to March 1, the report added.
