MULTAN: Multan Electric Power Company (Mepco) has claimed having apprehend a total of 3,792 electricity pilferers during the intensive campaign last week.
According to official sources, following the directives of the Prime Minister, an extensive operation against electricity theft in the Mepco region has produced remarkable results. From September 7th to September 15th, the law-enforcement agencies and MEPCO teams have been relentless in their pursuit of curbing this illicit practice.
The culprits also faced a collective fine exceeding Rs 172m, signifying the government’s determination to recover losses incurred due to theft. The authorities have also taken a stringent stance against the perpetrators, with 2,458 cases registered against them. It is to mention here that 1,887 cases have already been lodged in this regard and the legal process is well underway.
According to the officials, collaboration between MEPCO teams and the law-enforcement personnel led to the arrest of 63 electricity pilferers in Multan, three in Muzaffargarh, seven in DG Khan, seven in Vehari, 17 in Bahawalpur, and two in Sahiwal. The most arrests were recorded in Bahawalnagar with 24 individuals taken into custody for their involvement in electricity theft.
Additionally, 258 commercial entities, 78 tube wells, and 13 industries were caught pilfering electricity, underscoring the diverse nature of this problem. —APP
