WASHINGTON: The stalemate in the US House of Representatives continued on Thursday as Republican candidate Kevin McCarthy failed to control hardline men of his party to support his bid to become speaker of the House.
McCarthy’s bid failed again in a 9th and 10th round of voting due to the opposition of twenty hardline Republicans. An 11th vote on Thursday is likely to be held to elect the speaker of the house.
In the 8th round of voting on Wednesday, Kevin McCarthy did not take sufficient votes despite concessions to his critics.
US House of Representatives
In order for the US House of Representatives to conduct any business the party with the most seats must elect the Speaker of the House.
The Republicans have a thin majority after the November congressional polls, and the party leadership had put forward former leader of the Minority Kevin McCarthy for the job.
Some Republicans have either voted for another candidate or denied to vote at all, denying McCarthy the numbers he requires to get through.
Democrats, who unanimously elected Hakeem Jeffries of New York as minority leader, have so far denied to leave the floor, which would reduce the number of votes McCarthy needs to win.

Hakeem Jeffries said that it’s his hope that today the House Republicans will stop backstabbing so they can have the backs of the American people.
Reports said that some Democrats have also indicated to journalists that they would support a candidate of Republican if the party puts forward a nominee more likely to compromise over some issue.
