KARACHI: Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari on Thursday said that May 9 was “another black day” in the country’s history.
Speaking at the press conference in Karachi, Bilawal, flanked by Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah and Provincial Information Minister Sharjeel Memon, said: “in Pakistan, many days are marked as the “black days”, and now May 9 has been added to the list.”
He said, “We [Pakistan People’s Party ] never celebrate when a political leader is arrested because we believe when political leaders are arrested, it is the loss of the politics at large. In such scenarios, the PPP has never celebrated and distributed sweets.”
He said that his party had always been “against” the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) from the get-go. In contrast, the PTI had always defended the anti-graft body and benefitted from it.”
“Imran initiated the campaign to save the NAB when we demanded amendments. Imran Khan said we’re seeking NRO and did not agree on the proposed amendments. Now, when the new laws were introduced, it is the PTI chief who has become its beneficiary.”
Bilawal stressed that he was “principally opposed to the banning of any political party.” He said, “such decisions are made because of the circumstances”.
He said his party was committed to holding elections “on time”.
Bilawal expressed his disappointment with the outcome of the negotiations between political parties.
