ISLAMABAD: Plunging temperatures wreaking havoc across Canada and the US can lead to frostbite on bare skin in only five to 10 minutes, weather experts are warning.
A powerful Arctic winter storm placed more than 135 million people under a weekend weather alert ahead of the year’s busiest travel days. Alerts stretch from coast to coast, and waves reach far south as the US-Mexico border, Florida, and the Sunshine State, according to BBC.
A massive winter and freezing storm system enveloped a vast stretch of the US, threatening to upend the travel program of millions of people ahead the what could turn out to be one of the freezing Christmas days on record in many cities of the US.
Massive Freezing winter Temperature
The National Weather Service (NWS) said a temperature of -50F and -70F was possible by the end of the week in some parts of the country.
They warned that frostbite will be a major danger even in major metro areas, like the city of Des Moines, Iowa.
Many airports have cancelled thousands of flights as the winter storm intensifies.
US Meteorologists said the winter storm could become a “bomb cyclone” by Friday.
Frostbite is caused when the blood flow is reduced, often to extremities like the cheeks and nose or fingers and toes. Lack of warm blood has led to tissue freezing, rupturing, and, in some cases, amputation.
