Massive Fire Engulfs 200 Shops in Herat Province of Afghanistan

KABUL: The provincial head of the artisans union, a fire broke out in a big market in Afghanistan’s western Herat province, engulfing about 200 stalls, according to Abdul Wadood Faizzada.

Faizzada told Xinhua that the fire broke out around 3 a.m. local time at Qasr-e-Herat market in Herat’s 2nd Municipality District, engulfing 200 shops of various commodities, mostly clothes and cosmetics, costing 100 million Afghanis (about 1,163,000 US dollars).

No Casualties in Herat Fire

According to Abdul Latif Insaf, the provincial police spokesperson, the blaze started at midnight on Friday but was quickly put out by fire department workers. The spokesman said that there were no casualties or injuries, but the fire caused major damage to local businesses.
