ISLAMABAD/ ZHENGZHOU: One person was killed in a massive car pileup involving over 200 vehicles in the central Chinese city of Zhengzhou on Wednesday, according to state media.

The mass accident occurred on a bridge as multiple vehicles crammed into each other amid heavy morning fog, according to The Global Times.

Thick fog caused cars to crash into each other

Photos from the scene showed cars, cargo trucks, lorries and other vehicles piled up on the long multi-lane bridge over the Yellow River. The air still appeared thick with fog in videos filmed from the ground. One clip showed a truck sliding forward, crashing into several smaller cars, as sirens rang in the distance.

Many drivers and passengers were trapped in their vehicles after the accident, reported The Global Times. Emergency responders, firefighters, and traffic and health personnel were deployed to the scene.

One eyewitness told The Global Times that the pileup was spread over to several kilometers and that moisture on the bridge made the road particularly slippery.
