ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Senior Vice-President Maryam Nawaz on Wednesday took exception to Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Umar Ata Bandial’s remarks about parliamentarians during a hearing of the polls delay case in the Supreme Court (SC).

“When the parliamentarians were talking about law and Constitution, you [CJP] taunted them. Do you know how prideful it is to go to jail for a doctrine?” said the PML-N leader while addressing a lawyers’ convention in Rawalpindi.

Maryam’s comments came after, at one point during the SC hearing on Pakistan Tehreek Insaf’s (PTI) petition against the Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) decision to postpone Punjab Assembly polls, the CJP had said that there were certain lawmakers who were considered respectable now and could be seen addressing the parliament, but had served jail terms and were declared traitors in the past.

Taking aim at the judiciary, Maryam remarked that elected premiers were thrown out in political cases but the irony is that no dictator was ever served with justice. She said that they (judges) can only pressurize the elected representatives of the people.

Maryam said that she is happy that PML-N has lawyers like Azam Nazir Tarar, Rana Sanaullah, Mohsin Ranjha, and Daniyal Chaudhary on its side.

Lauding the services of lawyers for the country, she said: ‘’Today I have come to those who made Pakistan and those who saved Pakistan. A party with such a dynamic wing of lawyers cannot be defeated. I have come to the defenders of the constitution of Pakistan.’’

She said that, in its 76-year history, Pakistan faced dictatorship for 40 years because no elected prime minister ever completed their term, adding that four dictators came and they completed their terms through bullying and force.

Nawaz Sharif restored Judiciary and Judges: Maryam

Talking about former president and army chief Pervez Musharraf, she said that he grabbed the judge of the Supreme Court by the hair and dragged him on the road.

She said at that time “Nawaz Sharif, the representative of the people, came forward to restore the judiciary and judges.”

Maryam said that when the case related to the election delay was being heard in the court, she was watching TV and found that the chief justice got emotional during the hearing, adding that he should have gotten emotional when “I spent five months in Adiala Jail and five months in NAB’s (National Accountability Bureau) custody”.

Slamming Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan, Maryam said that the ex-chief of Inter-Services Intelligence General (retd) Faiz Hameed was Imran’s biggest facilitator.

She said that though the former military man was now retired, his remnants were still facilitating Khan.

She also bashed Khan “for not declaring Tyrian White as his daughter”.
