MANILA: European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen expressed on Monday the European Union’s willingness to enhance collaboration with the Philippines on maritime security.

Her statement came following a meeting with Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. in Manila.

In a joint statement with Marcos, she said, “We are ready to strengthen the cooperation with the Philippines on maritime security in the region by sharing information, conducting threat assessment and building the capacity of your coast guard”.

The Philippines holds a pivotal position in the geopolitical rivalry between the United States and China, as its maritime territory includes a significant part of the South China Sea. This waterway is a crucial and resource-rich area over which China also asserts sovereignty.

During their meeting, the leaders also discussed the possibility of restarting negotiations for a free trade agreement and the Southeast Asian country’s efforts towards transitioning its energy resources.
