SANAA, Yamen: In the Bab al-Mandeb strait, a significant shipping lane off Yemen, a reported “possible explosion” occurred near a vessel.

Maritime security firm Ambrey stated that the captain reported the incident two nautical miles off one of the vessel’s quarters. This area has been previously threatened by attacks, mainly attributed to Huthi in Yemen.

The Huthi have launched drone and missile attacks in the region, prompting several major shipping firms to reroute their vessels away from the Red Sea.

The incident coincided with the visit of US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin to Bahrain, where discussions on efforts to address threats to shipping and the global economy are anticipated.

The situation is complex, involving regional tensions and efforts for international mediation, with Oman reportedly playing a role. The Huthi, in their statements, connect their actions to the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
