LONDON: Amy Winehouse’s devoted fans have expressed their disappointment after watching the first clips from the highly anticipated biopic of the late icon’s life, titled “Back To Black.”
In a newly released clip from the movie, Marisa Abela, portraying the iconic singer, is seen performing at London’s Ronnie Scott Jazz Bar. However, fans have been quick to criticize the portrayal, claiming that it fails to capture “Amy Winehouse’s talent, charm, or personality.”
Marisa Abela has previously revealed that she was not questioned about her singing abilities during the casting process. In an interview alongside the film’s director, Sam Taylor-Johnson, she disclosed, “I don’t think anyone even asked me in the audition process if I could sing!”
“I knew Sam and I felt the same way that whoever was going to play this part needed to be Amy from the inside out,” she continued.
Marisa Abela Emphasizes Her Commitment to Embodying Winehouse’s Essence
Reflecting on her approach to the role, Marisa emphasized her commitment to embodying Winehouse’s essence, including her singing prowess. She shared, “For me, when I got the job, I wanted to learn to sing as much as I could because this was her chosen medium – this is her art form, this is how she expressed herself.”
The actress further detailed the extensive training she underwent to master Winehouse’s vocal style: “It felt so odd to do all of this work and then come to open my mouth to sing and cut to a studio recording. I trained really hard, I trained for two hours a day for four months.”
“Back to Black,” the biopic set to delve into Amy Winehouse’s journey to stardom and tumultuous marriage with Blake Fielder-Civil, is scheduled to premiere in theaters in April.
