Manipur: Toll in Violence Rises to 3 as One More Succumbs to Injuries

PALLEL, India: The toll in the Pallel violence that broke out in Manipur’s Tengnoupal district rose to three with a 37-year-old man succumbing to his injuries during treatment at a hospital, said the officials on Saturday.

The man sustained bullet wounds in his head during crossfire between security forces and armed protesters, they said. He died overnight while undergoing treatment at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences in Imphal, according to the officials.

Earlier, two persons were killed and 50 others, including an Army major, were injured when hundreds of majority community members attempted to storm tribal villages.

On Friday morning, a gunfight erupted between security forces and armed persons who attempted to arson and indulge in violence at Molnoi village near Pallel.

As the news of the gunfight spread, large groups of Meitei community, including Meira Paibis and Arambai Tenggol militiamen dressed in commando uniforms, attempted to break through security check posts and move towards Pallel.
