Manipur Situation: Schools to Remain Closed Amid Protests

NEW DELHI:  The government has closed all the government, and private schools till Friday after the fresh protests erupted in the in violence hit Manipur state of India leaving 10 persons injured, local media reported on Tuesday.

The Directorate of Education – Schools, Manipur in a post on X (formerly Twitter) said all State Government/State Government Aided/Private Unaided Schools will be closed from 27-29 September.

The authorities in the state have also suspended mobile internet services for five days.

India’s Violence-hit Manipur

Earlier at least 10 persons were wounded in clashes between police and mobs in different areas of Manipur.

A total curfew had been imposed in Imphal East and Imphal West districts as a precautionary measure by the authorities.

Tensions have been increasing in Imphal over the arrest of five armed miscreants on September 16 for carrying arms and wearing camouflage uniforms.

On September 4, a group of about 20 independent United Nations human rights experts, including the Special Rapporteurs on violence against women and girls and torture strongly condemned and expressed serious concerns about the slow and inadequate response by Narendra Modi-led Indian government, on rights violations, including sexual violence and hate speech, during deadly ethnic clashes in the state of Manipur.

The world is also in extreme anger after a mob paraded two women naked in the violence-hit Manipur in July.

According to Western media reports more than 200 people have been killed while more than 60,000 have been forced to leave their areas for safer places since the clashes started between the two ethnic groups on May 3.
