Manhunt Underway after Six Die in Mass Shooting in South Africa

CAPE TOWN: A mass shooting in South Africa has left 6 people dead and four injured when three men entered a home and opened fire, police said on Wednesday.

The incident happened in KwaNobuhle near the Kariega town in the povince of Eastern Cape on Tuesday night. The suspects have not been apprehended and a search is under way, according to police.

South Africa is among the nations that have the highest homicide rates in the world and about 2,629 people were killed with a firearm in the first 3 months of this year, as per the official crime statistics.

That is a rate of thirty people a day, very serious figures for the country of sixty million.

The targeted killing of celebrities and kidnapping for ransom have also been rising in in the country.

Police said that it is alleged that three unknown male assailants entered the yard and opened fire at people who were present in the property or nearby to the house, Al Jazeera reported.

Two women were shot at the gate. One woman succumbed to her wounds while the other sustained gunshot injuries, police added. The purpose of the attack is still unclear.

Shooting incidents in South Africa

There has been a string of mass shootings in the country recently, including at least 3 this year.

Last year, sxteen people were killed in Soweto, Johannesburg after numerous assailants shot at people at a bar. 8 people were fatally shot at a birthday party in the same province of Eastern Cape in January. A child was among ten members of the same family fatally shot at a house in April.
