MANCHESTER, England: Manchester United is in discussions with Sporting Lisbon coach Ruben Amorim to take over as manager following Erik ten Hag’s dismissal after a poor season start.

United’s fourth loss in nine Premier League matches left them in 14th place, prompting the club’s decision to part ways with Ten Hag despite a significant transfer investment.

Former striker Ruud van Nistelrooy has been named interim manager as United negotiates with Amorim, who is seen as one of Europe’s most promising young coaches.

According to Associated Press, Ten Hag’s tenure, beginning in 2022, initially brought success as he led United to a League Cup win, an FA Cup final, and a third-place Premier League finish. However, this season’s setbacks, including high-profile losses to teams like Liverpool and Tottenham, costly signings failing to deliver, and a lack of clear tactical direction, have compounded United’s struggles.

High-profile purchases under Ten Hag, such as Antony and Matthijs de Ligt, along with new additions this season, did little to halt the downward slide.

Reports suggest Amorim, known for his tactical acumen and recent successes in Portugal, is interested in discussions.

His arrival could signal a fresh start for United, which has faced managerial instability since Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure in 2013, cycling through five managers without a title challenge. Former players like Gary Neville and Rio Ferdinand have criticized the team’s lack of improvement despite considerable investments, with Neville calling the current standings “unacceptable.”

Amorim’s potential appointment would mark a strategic shift as United seeks long-term stability and a return to consistent success.
