NEW YORK: Officials apprehended a man in the New York capital of Albany on Thursday after he fired a gun outside a synagogue, the state’s governor said.
No injuries occurred in the incident, which transpired shortly before the commencement of Hanukkah. Witnesses observed the local resident acting suspiciously outside the synagogue, ultimately firing a round from a shotgun while making threatening statements.
Governor Hochul emphasized the non-negotiable priority of ensuring the safety of Jewish New Yorkers, condemning any form of anti-Semitism, whether verbal or physical. She underscored New York’s rejection of hate, anti-Semitism, and Islamophobia, declaring heightened police vigilance during the Hanukkah period.
Previously, both Governor Hochul and Mayor Eric Adams of New York City, located approximately 90 miles south of Albany, participated in demonstrations supporting Israel and Jewish-Americans at the onset of the Israel-Hamas conflict.
