BAMAKO: Mali’s ruling junta asked Sunday the head of the human rights division of MINUSMA and the UN mission to leave the country within 48 hours.

The announcement comes following a Malian rights activist in January criticized the security situation in Mali in a speech to a UN get-together, and alleged the government’s new Moscow military partners of serious violations of human rights.

The foreign ministry of Mali had declared Guillaume Ngefa Atonodok Andali, chief of MINUSMA’s human rights section, persona non grata, government spokesman said.

It added that the step was taken following the destabilizing and subversive acts of Andali. The statement said that Andali’s bias was also evident during the last review of the UNSC on Mali.

MINUSMA was formed in 2013 to try to bring stability in Mali in the face of the growing threat from militants. Its mission also included the safety of civilians, contributing to peace efforts and protects human rights.
