KUALA LUMPUR: In a major setback, the 97-year-old elder statesman and former Prime Minister of Malaysia, Mahathir Mohamad, lost his parliamentary seat in Saturday’s elections, marking the likely end of Asia’s most enduring politician’s political career.
The Malaysian election commission said that Mahathir Mohamad lost his long-held constituency of Langkawi. This was the first defeat of the former prime minister in more than 50 years of his political career.
Mahathir achieved the Guinness World Record for becoming the “world’s oldest prime minister” when he assumed the charge for a second time at the age of 93 in 2018.
Malaysian People Rejected Mahathir Mohamad
Mahathir Mohamad has been largely criticized for ruling Malaysia from 1981 to 2003 with an iron fist; however, he is also appreciated for transforming the country into one of the globe’s highest exporters of technology goods and services.
He ensured political stability and was bestowed with the title “Father of Modern Malaysia.” APP
