KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim is expected to announce significant changes to his cabinet on Tuesday, marking his first leadership reshuffle since assuming power a year ago, as reported by various Malaysian media outlets.
According to sources cited by The Star, the cabinet reshuffle is poised to impact “several ministries” and may witness the return of “senior MPs who had previously served as ministers.” Additionally, the report suggests the inclusion of new faces, with several Members of Parliament expected to make their debut as ministers.
The Bernama news agency reported that a swearing-in ceremony for federal ministers is scheduled at the Istana Negara. The ceremony will include the oath of office, loyalty, and secrecy, with the newly appointed cabinet members also receiving their respective letters of appointment.
Reshuffle of Malaysian Cabinet
Astro Awani, a broadcaster, has reported that the reshuffle will involve “more than six people,” and some ministers will be “swapping portfolios.” Speculation surrounds the appointment of a new Minister of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living, potentially to replace the late Dr. Salahuddin Ayub, who passed away in July due to a brain hemorrhage.
There is also talk in local media about the possibility of Anwar Ibrahim appointing a second finance minister. The Star had earlier reported United Malay National Organization (UMNO) member Johari Abdul Ghani as a potential candidate. Anwar Ibrahim currently holds the Finance Minister portfolio, and Johari served as the second finance minister from 2016 to 2018 during the administration of former Premier Najib Razak.
Additionally, there are rumors of changes to the Ministry of Human Resources and the Ministry of Natural Resources, Environment, and Climate Change.
