PUTRAJAYA, Malaysia: Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has emphasized that stringent action will be taken against any individual, including the Prime Minister or a Minister, involved in the misappropriation of public funds.

Launching the national Central Database Hub on January 2, Anwar commended the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) for its commitment to combating corruption without bias based on individuals’ positions or statuses.

Anwar acknowledged Malaysia’s determination to take action against leaders accused of corruption, even those considered exempt from investigation. The MACC recently initiated an investigation into Tun Daim Zainuddin, a former finance minister and a key ally of former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, under the country’s abuse of power and money laundering laws. The investigation led to the seizure of Ilham Tower, a 60-storey building in Kuala Lumpur, as part of the probe.

During the event, Anwar addressed rumors of an alleged attempt to unseat him, known as the “Dubai Move.” He stated that the government’s focus remains on developing the country and the people, downplaying the impact of such rumors on their work.

Anwar also commended the police for taking action against drug trafficking and emphasized a shift towards investigating drug-ring leaders, signaling a crackdown on high-profile individuals involved in drug-related offenses.

The Prime Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to accountability and transparency, emphasizing that no one, regardless of their position, will be immune to legal action if found guilty of misusing public funds. This stance aligns with Malaysia’s determination to combat corruption and uphold the rule of law.
