KULA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s opposition political parties claimed on Sunday that they have secured the required support and obtained the required number of parliament seats to form a government as none of the political parties managed to secure a clear majority in the parliament in the landmark polls held on Saturday.
Government Formation and Views of Opposition Political Parties in Malaysia
Opposition political party leader Anwar Ibrahim claimed his alliance had enough seats to form government in the country. It is noteworthy that Anwar Ibrahim would become Prime Minister if his coalition forms the Government. Former Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, chief of National Alliance said that he is also holding talks to form the Government following yesterday’s elections.
The palace asked the political parties on Sunday to submit the names of their coalition partners and their preferred choice for Prime Minister by 2 pm Monday.
Malaysia is Home to 33 Million People
Malaysia is home to 33 million people and will need a ruling alliance with a strong mandate to resolve skyrocketing food prices and an economy reeling from Covid-19. Anwar said that they have the majority to form a government in the country.
However, he did not give more details about the coalition partners and said that he would submit the names of their partners before the King.
Former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad Failed to Secure his Seat
The official results show that the Alliance of Hope alliance has secured 82 seats and Muhyiddin’s Perikatan Nasional won 73 seats. Barisan Nasional led by Najib Razak’s United Malays National Organization party did not perform well while the polls saw the rise of the Malaysian Islamic Party.
It may be recalled that one of the highest profile losses in the polls was former prime minister Mahathir Mohamad. The 97 years old was defeated in his seat. Voter turnout in the election was high and it was already at 70 percent, media reported. Corruption was a main issue during the elections campaign in the country.
