KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia: Dozens of Malaysian Immigration Department officers, including a senior officer, were arrested for their involvement in an illegal syndicate that facilitated the entry of foreign workers without proper documents.
The senior officer, in his 40s, allegedly masterminded a “counter-setting” operation at Kuala Lumpur International Airport, where foreigners were allowed to enter through predetermined lanes without required documentation.
Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief Azam Baki revealed that the officer influenced around 50 immigration officers and distributed bribes among them. The suspect, arrested on September 5 after an attempted escape, had been with the department for about 20 years.
The MACC launched multiple operations following six months of intelligence gathering, leading to the arrests of 49 immigration officers, one policeman, two agents, and eight individuals involved in supplying mule bank accounts.
