DUBAI: During Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s state visit to Abu Dhabi, Malaysia announced a significant partnership with the UAE to accelerate its energy transition efforts. The Malaysian government revealed plans to collaborate with the UAE to establish a renewable energy capacity of 10 GW by 2025. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, accompanied by Foreign Minister Zambry Abdul Kadir and Investment, Trade, and Industry Minister Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz, arrived in the UAE for a two-day trip on Thursday and witnessed the signing of key investment agreements.

The Ministry of Investment, Trade, and Industry in Malaysia disclosed that approximately $8.6 billion in investments have been committed, spanning sectors such as aerospace, logistics, and renewable energy. Among the agreements, Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company PJSC (Masdar) committed to investing up to $8 billion to develop renewable energy projects in Malaysia, aiming for a total capacity of 10 GW. This strategic collaboration aligns with Malaysia’s ambitious energy transition goals, outlined in the Malaysia Renewable Energy Roadmap.

“Renewable energy and low-carbon solutions are at the heart of Malaysia’s new target investments,” stated Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz, the Malaysian Investment, Trade, and Industry Minister. Malaysia aims to meet 31 percent of its energy needs (13 GW) through renewable sources by 2025 and increase it to 40 percent (18 GW) by 2035, as part of its renewable energy roadmap. Furthermore, the Ministry of Economy in Malaysia has committed to achieving 70 percent renewable energy capacity by 2050, necessitating significant investments in grid infrastructure, energy storage, and network operations.

Significant Collaboration Between UAE and Malaysia

The collaboration between Malaysia and the UAE signifies a crucial step toward Malaysia’s energy transition goals. Experts view the UAE as a natural partner due to its expertise in renewable energy and green hydrogen technologies. “Partnerships are vital to achieve such ambitious goals,” emphasized Adib Zalkapli, director at advisory firm BowerGroupAsia. The UAE’s emphasis on environmental stewardship aligns with its commitment to responsible climate action and positions the nation as an influential contributor to Malaysia’s energy transition efforts.

This collaboration not only advances Malaysia’s renewable energy ambitions but also strengthens bilateral ties between the two nations, marking a significant milestone in the pursuit of sustainable economic cooperation.
