KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia: Malaysia’s Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and New Zealand’s Prime Minister Chris Luxon jointly called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and the pursuit of a two-state solution between Israel and Palestine during a press conference on Monday. Both leaders emphasized the urgency of bringing the conflicting parties to the negotiating table to achieve peace.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim expressed skepticism about the current prospects for a ceasefire, citing a lack of commitment from influential countries, particularly the United States, which could play a significant role in stopping the conflict. He emphasized that engaging the U.S. to adopt a stronger stance could be the only viable path forward.

Malaysia has consistently supported the Palestinian cause and advocates for a two-state solution. Anwar, known for his relations with Palestinian leaders, reiterated that Malaysia’s stance is diplomatic and does not involve military support. Meanwhile, Luxon, on a three-day visit to Malaysia, announced plans to enhance defense cooperation by deploying New Zealand’s P8 Poseidon patrol aircraft for joint exercises in Malaysia, signaling a broader engagement between the two countries.
