KUALA LUMPUR: Severe flooding in several parts of Malaysia has displaced over 56,159 people in five states, according to the data released by the government on Tuesday.
The worst affected areas are along the Peninsula’s east coast, with 17,326 flood-affected people from Kelantan state and 37,792 flood-affected people from Terengganu state.
The victims have been evacuated to flood relief centers, Bernama, Malaysia’s state news agency, reported.
Malaysian authorities confirm casualties
The authorities confirmed the deaths of five people, including a 15-month-old minor boy.
The river water in various areas in the affected states exceeded the danger level.
Rescue and fire department’s fire safety division director Ahmad Izram Osman informed that the rescue team was conducting aerial monitoring of the affected areas to get an accurate account of the flash flood situation in Terengganu state. He said that similar monitoring would also be conducted in Kelantan state.
