WASHINGTON: A majority of members of the US House of Representatives have shown their support for a bipartisan resolution demanding for a nuclear-free Iran and regime change in the country.
Several of the Democrat and Republican co-sponsors of the resolution addressed at the event on Thursday to show their support for the Iranian public and their desire for a democratic system of government to replace the theocratic regime in Iran.
A symbolic resolution
The resolution has no legal authority and it is more of a symbolic support for the Iranian people and opposition to the actions of the government. The resolution also condemned human rights violations by the regime during the ongoing protest demonstrations that started in September last year following Mahsa Amini’s death in custody. The 22-year-old woman suffered a serious head injury after she was detained by the morality police in Tehran, who accused her of not properly following the rules governing head coverings.
