ISLAMABAD: In a significant move towards digital transformation and passenger convenience, Pakistan’s federal government has announced plans to provide Wi-Fi facilities at all major railway stations across the country.

The decision was finalised during a key meeting between Federal Minister for Railways Muhammad Hanif Abbasi and the Chairman of the Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB).

The initiative is part of a broader effort to modernise Pakistan Railways by implementing digital upgrades and enhancing public services. Among the reforms, a new biometric system will be introduced to monitor the attendance of railway employees, thereby ensuring greater transparency and accountability.

“All departments within Pakistan Railways will be transitioned to digital systems,” said Abbasi, highlighting the government’s commitment to efficient, technology-driven operations.

In a surprise visit to Lahore Railway Station, Abbasi also inspected sanitation standards and food quality. He directed officials to expedite the upgradation of the station’s Waiting Area and Business Lounge, setting a target of 60 days for completion. Air-conditioner installation was also ordered on an urgent basis to improve comfort for passengers.

The minister also reviewed the ongoing installation of escalators at station platforms and called for improvements to the railway’s official mobile app to enhance user-friendliness for travellers.

These developments mark a clear push towards modernising the country’s railway infrastructure and enhancing service delivery, in line with the federal government’s broader digitalisation agenda.
