RAMALLAH: Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has appointed Mohammad Mustafa as the new prime minister of the Palestinian Authority (PA), said the Palestinian news agency WAFA on Thursday.
The announcement comes after increasing pressure on Abbas to reform the governing body of the occupied Palestinian territories and enhance governance in the occupied West Bank.
The new prime minister is going to lead the authority in the relief and rebuilding of the war-hit Gaza Strip and reform the institutions of the Palestinian Authority.
Mustafa replaces former Prime Minister Mohammed Shttayah who resigned in February along with his cabinet.
The PA, which is led by the Fatah political party, held administrative control over Gaza till 2007 after Hamas won the 2006 elections in the occupied territories and expelled Fatah from the strip. Since then, Hamas has governed Gaza and the PA controls parts of the Israeli-occupied West Bank.
