TOKYO: A magnitude 6.1 earthquake hit Hokkaido in northern Japan on Saturday, the Japan Meteorological Agency and the US Geological Survey said.
According to local media reports no alert of tsunami was issued following the earthquake, which shook the coastal cities of Nemuro and Kushiro.
Japan has strict construction law
Japanese press did not report of damage and injuries after earthquake. The USGS added that the quake occurred at 10:27 pm at a depth of around 43 km.
Japan has strict construction laws and regulations to ensure buildings and structures can withstand strong quakes as earthquakes are common in the country.
