JOHANNESBURG: A 5.0-magnitude earthquake occurred on Sunday near Johannesburg, shaking buildings throughout the country’s most populated province, the United States Geological Survey said that.

According to the USGS, the tremor happened at 2:38 am (0:38 GMT) and was centred around 10 kilometres (six miles) underground.

In the province of Gauteng, home to Johannesburg, the nation’s main metropolis and commercial centre, buildings began to tremble.

Residents in the entire province felt the tremor, and several shared photos on social media of minor wall structure damage.

A gold mining community near Johannesburg was struck by an earthquake of a 5.3 magnitude in August 2014.

The Western Cape province was rocked by a 6.3-magnitude earthquake in 1969, which was the last significant earthquake to occur in South Africa. AFP
