WASHINGTON: The United States has said that Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro needs to release polls data from July’s controversial election. White House national security spokesman John Kirby stated that Nicolas Maduro should release the date of the elections in order to address international concerns regarding it validity.
Opposition leader Edmundo Gonzalez has gone to Spain to seek asylum in the wake of the election, Spanish and Venezuelan officials said over the weekend, following rising diplomatic tensions.
According to media reports, the disputed election in the Latin American country has sparked countrywide protests, resulting in 25 deaths and numerous arrests. Global actors, including the U.S., the EU, and Latin American nations, have refused to recognize Maduro’s declared win, citing lack of transparency and evidence. Observers noted that Maduro’s ability to remain in power will largely depend on global pressure and continued opposition efforts.
