Madrid Meeting Reiterates Joint Commitment to Implementation of Two-State Solution

MADRID: The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s (KSA) Minister of Foreign Affairs Prince Faisal bin Farhan bin Abdullah attended the meeting of the representatives of the Ministerial Joint Contact Group of the League of Arab States and Organization of Islamic Cooperation (Bahrein, Egypt, Jordan, the State of Palestine, Qatar, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Türkiye, the League of Arab States and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation); and the Foreign Ministers and Representatives of Norway, Ireland, Spain, and Slovenia which was held in Madrid, according to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).

According to the joint statemen, the meeting reiterates joint commitment to implementation of the two-State Solution for lasting peace and security.  It stated,  “We, representatives of the Ministerial Joint Contact Group of the League of Arab States and Organization of Islamic Cooperation, Bahrein, Egypt, Jordan, the State of Palestine, Qatar, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) and Türkiye, the League of Arab States and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation; and the Foreign Ministers and Representatives of Norway, Ireland, Slovenia and Spain; met in Madrid, in the midst of the worst crisis that the Middle East has suffered in many decades, to reiterate our joint commitment to the implementation of the two-State solution, as the only way to establish lasting peace and security”.

“During the years of the peace process, the parties and the world have defined terms of reference and parameters for the implementation of the two-State solution, based on relevant UNSC Resolutions, rules and principles of global law, and the Arab Peace Initiative. Instead, unilateral unlawful steps, settlements, forced displacement and extremism have frustrated both people’s hopes for peace. Since October 7th an unprecedented tragedy of unspeakable human suffering and violations of global law are unfolding before our eyes, and undermining global peace and security”. The statement added that they condemned all forms of violence and terrorism.

“We call for the credible, irreversible implementation of the two-State solution in accordance with global law and agreed parameters, including the Arab Peace Initiative, to obtain a just and lasting peace that fulfils the rights of Palestinians, to ensure the security of Israel and achieve normal ties in a region where stability, security, peace and cooperation prevail”.

It added, “Today, we recommit to our joint peace efforts to advance the implementation of the two State solution. We recall that our nations have agreed on the need to convene as soon as possible an international peace conference”.

The joint statement maintained, “With these objectives in mind, we call on the parties and all the members of the UN to join the broader meeting on “The situation in Gaza and the implementation of the two-State solution as the path to a just and comprehensive peace”, on the margins of the next session of the UN General Assembly on 26th September 2024.”
