BRASILIA:  A legislator supported by President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva was reelected as the leader of the Senate in Brazil, local media reported on Wednesday.

Rodrigo Pacheco held onto his position as president of the Senate, defeating Rogerio Marinho of Bolsonaro’s Liberal Party by a vote of 49 to 32.

Members of the 513-seat Chamber of Deputies and 81-seat upper house were sworn in Wednesday in a ceremony, less than a month following rioters attacked Congress, the country’s apex court, and the presidential palace, claiming President Lula’s victory was fraudulent.

Politics in Brazil

In the lower-house vote, due later Wednesday, the winner is likely to be incumbent speaker Arthur Lira.

The post is very powerful in Brazil. The speaker of the lower house is 2nd in the line of the country’s presidential succession, after the vice president, and has the authority to decide whether or not to allow impeachment proceedings to move forward.
