Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb confirmed on Thursday that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has consented to appoint Lt-Gen Asim Munir as the Chief of the Army Staff and Lt-Gen Sahir Shamshad Mirza as the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, by using his constitutional authority.
In a tweet, she said that the summary has been sent to the present and a formal announcement will be made soon.
Meanwhile, the federal cabinet on Thursday approved to “seize the retirement tenure” of the newly appointed army chief and the chairman joint chiefs of staff committee under the Army Act 1952, which has already set the retirement age of the chief of army staff at 64 years.
the Army Act 1952, empowers the prime minister to extend the service tenures of the army chief and the chairman joint chiefs of staff committee by three years.
Meanwhile, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif also confirmed that the summary has been sent to the president for advice. He hoped that the president will not look into the issue through the prism of politics and approve it.
“We hope, the president will not make it a point for political scoring,” he said adding that each and every point had been deliberated upon and had been finalised legally
