ISLAMABAD: Suzuki Mehran bid farewell to Pakistan’s roads four years ago, but its legacy endures in the hearts of many.
This classic 800cc hatchback, which initially hit the streets in the 1980s, maintains a special place in the annals of Pakistan’s automotive history thanks to its affordability, low maintenance costs, and fuel efficiency.
In 2019, Pak Suzuki marked the end of the Suzuki Mehran’s three-decade-long reign, a car that symbolized the aspirations of the middle class.
When it first debuted in the 1980s, this iconic hatchback sported a modest price tag of Rs90,000. Fast forward to March 2019, and the final iteration of the Mehran was retailing at approximately Rs0.8 million. While Suzuki made minor adjustments over the years, the Mehran’s overall shape and specifications remained unchanged.
Yet, this constancy did not impede its success in the Pakistani market, where it maintained a dominant position despite lacking advanced safety features.
Today, the Suzuki Mehran can still be found in the local market, with prices ranging from Rs 6.5 to 15 lakhs. The actual cost varies depending on the model and the vehicle’s condition, reflecting the enduring demand for this classic hatchback.
One of Mehran’s standout features was its fuel efficiency. With a 32-liter fuel tank, it delivered around 13 kilometers per liter within city limits and an impressive 16-18 kilometers per liter on highways, making it an economical choice for many.
Suzuki Mehran offered a choice of four colors: Solid White, Pearl Red, Graphite Grey, and Silver, allowing buyers some room for personalization despite its simple design.
