ISLAMABAD: Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari on Wednesday said that the establishment of “Loss and Damage” fund under the chairmanship of Pakistan at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27) in Sharm Al Shiekh, Egypt in November to assist the climate disaster-hit countries, was a big achievement.

In an interview with Arab News, the foreign minister said that the Fund was something that climate activists had been trying for the last thirty years and he felt proud that it was achieved under the chairmanship of Pakistan.

He said that there were different perspectives on the question of climate change as the developing countries felt their carbon contribution was smaller than that of the developed world. Pakistan presented the aspirations and viewpoints of the developing world.

Fund a demonstration of developing world collective strength

Bilawal said that the establishment of the Fund was a demonstration of the developing countries wielding collective strength when had a common cause. Getting such a kind of consensus was also a great success.

He said that there were many things that united the developing nations and less that divide them. The developing countries should find common ground, areas in which they could work together, rather than finding dividing areas.
