LONDON, England: In a UK-first, Guy’s Hospital in London is set to trial using drones to transport urgent blood samples, significantly reducing delivery times. The six-month pilot project will send samples from the hospital to a laboratory, cutting travel time from over 30 minutes to less than two minutes.

The initiative aims to improve patient care and reduce environmental impact, according to the Civil Aviation Authority.

Run by healthcare logistics company Apian and drone firm Wing, the project follows a successful test confirming drone delivery does not damage blood samples.

The trial could lead to broader adoption of drones in London hospitals for medical logistics. Apian has already been involved in using drones for medical supply delivery in other locations, including Dublin.

Drones have proven effective in delivering medical supplies in remote regions like Rwanda and have been explored in countries such as Canada and India.
