ISLAMABAD: The annual cultural event “Lok Mela” will take place at the National Institute of Folk and Traditional Heritage (Lok Virsa) in Islamabad from November 8 to 17. This vibrant festival promises a rich cultural experience for art enthusiasts.
Organized by Lok Virsa, an autonomous cultural organization under the National Heritage and Culture Division, the event is set to attract artisans, performers, and visitors from across the nation. An official from Lok Virsa stated, “Preparations for the Lok Mela are in full swing to ensure its success, with numerous attractions planned.”
This year’s Mela holds special significance as it coincides with the Golden Jubilee Celebrations of Lok Virsa (1974-2024), introducing several new and innovative features to the festival.
The Mela aims to promote Pakistan’s indigenous folk heritage, foster national unity, and provide a platform for master artisans, folk artists, musicians, and dancers to showcase their talents on a national stage.
In collaboration with provincial culture departments, all provinces, along with Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir, will set up cultural pavilions at the festival grounds.
Key highlights of the Mela include provincial cultural pavilions, live artisan demonstrations, a vibrant craft bazaar, an international cultural pavilion, a youth cultural pavilion, folk music and dance performances, puppet shows, stalls by civil society organizations, and an array of folk cuisine.
The Lok Mela is not just a celebration; it is a commitment to promoting Pakistan’s rich cultural diversity and fostering intercultural harmony.
It serves as an essential platform for preserving and celebrating the country’s traditional heritage, promising a colorful and enriching experience for visitors of all ages, and showcasing the heritage of all provinces.
