ISLAMABAD: Judicial magistrate Islamabad Abbas Shah on Tuesday granted police two-day physical remand of Hassaan Khan Niazi, the nephew and focal person of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Chairman Imran Khan.

Niazi was taken into custody by the Islamabad police outside the Judicial Complex here on Monday. He, according to the police, was arrested in connection with clashes between Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf workers and Islamabad police during Imran Khan’s appearance in a local court in the Toshakhana case. He was allegedly present at the crime scene when the former prime minister arrived at the Judicial Complex here.

Hassan Khan Niazi was apprehended in G-11

According to police sources, Niazi was nabbed in G-11 near the Judicial Complex for his alleged involvement in attacking law-enforcement personnel and causing chaos in the federal capital minutes after he obtained bail in three cases. The anti-terrorism court had granted bail to the PTI leaders including Hassan Khan Niazi against surety bond of Rs50,000 till April 3. The PTI leader was immediately shifted to an undisclosed location.

The arrest seems to be a part of an ongoing crackdown on the PTI activists and supporters who police claim assaulted law-enforcers while they were performing duty in the federal capital Islamabad. The party, however, claimed that Niazi had been “abducted” by the police officials as he had already obtained bail in all cases. Advocate Faisal Chaudhry had filed a petition in the Islamabad High Court for Niazi’s release.
