Libya’s Chief Prosecutor Seeks More Details on FM’s Meeting with Israel’s Minister

CAIRO: Libya’s chief prosecutor has said he would constitute a fact-finding mission to probe a meeting between the minister for foreign affairs of one of the country’s rival administrations and Israel’s FM, Western media reported on Saturday.

The August 22nd meeting between the two caused an upheaval across Libya. Foreign minister of the Tripoli-based government Najla Mangoush and Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen held a meeting in Rome, Italy.

Libya criminalizes establishing relations with Israel as per a 1957 law. The country has long been supportive of the Palestinians.

In a brief statement Saturday, the country’s General Prosecutor Al-Sediq Al-Sour said the mission would investigate violations of Libya’s law of boycotting Israel and “probe the extent of damage to country’s interests” due Mangoush-Cohen meeting.

Libya slipped into disorder following a NATO-backed uprising toppled longtime ruler Muammar Qaddafi in 2011.
