BEIRUT: Lebanon’s caretaker, Prime Minister Najib Mikati, said that he was working to prevent the country from being drawn into the conflict between Palestine and Israel, even as cross-border incidents between Hezbollah and Israel raise concerns about the potential for a broader escalation.
Mikati conveyed his concerns about the situation, noting the border skirmishes have raised worries about the possibility of Hezbollah opening a new front with Israel. He emphasized his duty to avert Lebanon’s involvement in the ongoing conflict to the south.
Mikati, who maintains cordial relations with Hezbollah, acknowledged that it is difficult to predict whether war is imminent, as it depends on regional developments. He noted that Hezbollah has thus far handled the situation judiciously, and the rules of engagement have been contained within certain boundaries.
However, he also acknowledged the ongoing uncertainty, stating that he cannot offer complete reassurance to the Lebanese people due to the evolving nature of the situation.
