BEIRUT, Lebanon: German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius visited Lebanon on Thursday to meet German soldiers serving in a UN peacekeeping force in the region in the wake of a major escalation between neighbouring Israel and the Palestinian group Hamas.

Germany has deployed approximately 140 soldiers, stationed on a corvette off the Lebanese coast and at the UNIFIL mission headquarters in southern Lebanon. Recently, the United Nations Interim Force In Lebanon (UNIFIL) headquarters was struck by a rocket, fortunately without causing any casualties.

During his visit on the Corvette Oldenburg, the minister expressed gratitude to the sailors for their dedication and received updates on how the Israel-Gaza conflict is affecting German soldiers in the area. This information was shared by the German defence ministry on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter.

UNIFIL has been active in Lebanon since 1978, with the primary mission of upholding peace along the border with Israel. Its mandate was further extended by a United Nations resolution following the cessation of hostilities in the 2006 conflict between Israel and Hezbollah in southern Lebanon.
