BEIRUT: The Lebanese army has said it had captured a key Al-Qaeda leader in Deir Ammar town, Tripoli, Arab media reported on Sunday. The army identified the arrested person only as “T.M.” and said that the leader was arrested on Friday.

The army claimed “T.M. is one of the prominent leaders of the group and the founder of its cells in Lebanon,”.

“The arrested man has also played a key role in setting up the terrorist Fatah Al-Islam group,” the army statement said, referring to an Al Qaeda-inspired militant organization that used to be active in Lebanon more than ten years ago.

The Lebanese army added T.M. withdrew from the spotlight in late 2007 after a fierce war between the Fatah Al-Islam and the army at a refugee camp in northern Lebanon.

He then returned to prominence following the rise of Daesh and Syrian militant group the Nusra Front, the army further said.
