DAMASCUS: An Israeli air strike killed two Syrian civilians, state media reported on Tuesday, the fourth such attack on government-controlled areas of the war-hit country in less than a week.

During the civil war, raging for over a decade, Israel launched hundreds of air attacks on its territory, primarily targeting Tehran-backed forces, Lebanese Hezbollah fighters, and Syrian army positions.

While quoting a military source, SANA, a Syrian state news agency, reported that the Israeli enemy carried out an air attack shortly after midnight, resulting “in the death of 2 civilians”.

It said that the strike came from the side of the occupied Syrian Golan, hitting some points near the capital Damascus and the southern region.

It added that Syria’s air defence system intercepted most of the missiles.

While Israel rarely makes statements on the attacks it carries out on Syria will not let its arch-enemy Iran extend its footprint in the war-hit country.

The war monitor, Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, provided the same civilian death toll, as its director Rami Abdel Rahman said that one non-Syrian Iran-backed fighter was also killed in the strike.

The Observatory said that Israel fired barrages of rockets targeting military areas controlled by Tehran-backed groups and regime air defence.

Two civilians killed in Al-Kiswah

An Israeli missile hit a radar in the countryside of Sweida, while another targeted a glass factory in the Al-Kiswah area of the capital Damascus countryside, killing the two civilians, it said.

The monitor had earlier said the rockets also hit the vicinity of Damascus International Airport and an Iranian complex close to the Sayyida Zeinab area, with Syria’s air defence system intercepting at least two missiles.

Syria’s foreign ministry condemned the attack.

It said in a statement that Syria warns Israel and its sponsors of the dangers of these aggressive policies, pushing the area towards total escalation and a new phase of instability and insecurity.

Iran, a key supporter of President Bashar al-Assad, said it only stations military advisers in the conflict-hit country.
