BEIJING: At least 14 people were killed and five went still missing as a result of a landslip in China’s Sichuan province, according to CCTV, the country’s official state media.

The landslip occurred in a hilly region near Leshan city in the province’s southernmost region at around 6 am (2200 GMT) on Sunday, Reuters said.

According to CCTV, search and rescue efforts were still going, and more than 180 rescuers have been sent to the scene.

According to weather tracking data, Leshan city saw significant rainfall over the two days prior to the landslide occurrence.

The location is in a hilly area around 240 kilometres (150 miles) from Chengdu, the province capital.

The remote, heavily wooded location is vulnerable to landslides and earthquakes, among other natural calamities.
