LAHORE: In a major relief to the general public, the Lahore High Court (LHC) on Friday suspended the ‘No helmet, no petrol’ notification issued by deputy commissioner Lahore.
The deputy commissioner had, in a notification, imposed a ban on the sale of petrol to bike-riders sans helmets. The petrol pumps were warned of fines over violation of the orders.
The court, after expressing deep concern over the matter trashed the notification issued by the deputy commissioner. There is no law available that bars from petrol sale to motorcyclists without helmets, the LHC bench remarked.
The court questioned the legality of such a directive, emphasizing the importance of upholding citizens’ fundamental rights in a just manner.
Terming the notification against the law, the LHC sought a reply from the DC, IG Punjab and the CCPO Lahore.
